so we were iat the gate bt 0530. with an hour to wait. Our driver that pick ed us up thought we were crazy to arrive so early. The desk did not open until about 0515. Our driver was to fetch the pilots etc. the airport is small obviously
We are leaving S Africa with feelings of pleasure. I am not sure what I was expecting but all has been good. The people have been without exception charming,helpful and kind. We often chatted with people i passing. Of course they did not really know Canada, and were horrified when we told about winter temperatures
There is rising unemployment and resultting discontent. we met someone who said the employment laws were discouraging, apparently making it difficult to let people go...so there is a reluctance to hire. We spoke to others who said they wanted to open businesses so that he Could employ more.
We talked to someone who,said he was thinking of leaving due to the security problems
I got a good impression of the people being happy, but when we left the restaurant the other evening , we had been sent off with our leftovers ,and a teenager boy said he was hungry, we handed over our bag and watched as he opened it and fell on to the food.
in the market in knysma there were a large contingent of zimbabweians They were selling handicrafts of various sorts. and they , you could see, were pulling together.
The serving staff is ujsually brown or black. and were always polite and quick to laugh , R felt that there was a lot of joy
In the eastern cape there is a worry about security, so we saw houses with barbed wire etc, but When we visited the family we met about Rs mother they did not have any extra except for the usual locks.
The geography is fabulous..it has. rural sense...herds of cows lining up to leave the fields
horses..
anyhow,,thought i would put down some thoughts.
